Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

Fashion

Has there ever been a more delectable designer collection than each and every one ofElie Saab’s? The Lebanese artist is known for bringing us a fairy tale of beauty, with shimmering fabrics and gliding dresses, silhouettes that are both sensual and utterly fascinating to watch sashaying down the runway, which is why it was interesting to hear that there are changes afoot in the manner in which Saab designs. Every artist needs to be flexible and adapt to an ever-changing society but we also know not to fix something that is not broken, which is why we approached the Elie Saab pre-fall 2016 collection with relative unease.

Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

We had noticed the changes happening from the Elie Saab SS 2016 show cast 2 months back in October, including the shorter hems, the sportier stripes and the whole walks by both Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner thing. Now, we are thrown for a loop again as Wellington boots appear on stage, a fact that has never existed before in an Elie Saab collection. They come in leather and metallic sequin embroideries in order to keep some things in line with the designer’s favored styles, and we certainly appreciate the lack of rubber in this line-up, but we still have to wonder about where our Lebanese favorite is taking it all.

Colors were muted a shade or two but that is all right. It is the Wellingtons that take things a bit too far. Then again, we can grow to like them as well… once we get over our fascination with the fairy tale worlds Saab has generally woven for us.

There are many look we can totally appreciate though. The sequined suit in black with nothing underneath the jacket and a pretty kitten ribbon tied around the neck has a few flavors for us. It speaks sultry while also bringing in a pinch of adorable chic, the style in of itself something delectable. Actually, sequins seem to be a big thing for the Elie Saab pre-fall 2016 collection, appearing on zip-up sweater dresses,

Other trends to take into consideration are the ever beautiful lace concoctions of Saab’s that appear as sleeves, the lower ends of dresses, the accordion pleating in the skirts, all over on minis and maxis, on embroidered jackets held up by ribbons and anywhere else you can think of, including those boots that go up to the knees or stick to the ankles and those lovely ankle length pants. We see shoes that are so very not like the Elie Saab we know, with open toe sandals in chunky styles that are almost reminiscent of Alexander Wang’s.

We rather like seeing colors other than the black as well, with pretty 18th century meets the 20th pink coral designs, interesting fur over lace outfits in Serenity and white, pretty dark teal lace looks and lots of pink and brown floral detailing on black gowns. This is a collection we did not expect from Elie Saab to say the least and we much prefer going back to the fluttery fabrics we have gotten used to. There is too much goth in here to be Elie Saab.

Louis Vuitton Resort 2016 Collection: Desert Flower

Louis Vuitton

LouisVuitton_Resort_2016_Bag_1

Palm Springs, with its casual, Southern California ease, is almost the last place you would expect the quietly reflective (and quintessentially French) Nicholas Ghesquière to show his newest collection for Louis Vuitton. But lo and behold, out poured his rhapsodic, simultaneously modern and retro, era-referencing Resort ’16 collection for the house at the Bob Hope Estate, an architectural gem that served as the ideal venue. Desert glam was in full force!

So were plenty of new bag shapes, unusual for a Resort collection but for a house that was built upon bags, a fact that makes perfect sense. They run the gamut from squarely structured top-handle totes, petite clutches with studded and quilted texture, easy backpacks (one classically monogrammed) and the bag that’s become the brand’s quintessential piece all over again, the trunk, reimagined yet again in gutsy prints and a spectrum of sizes.

As for the ready-to-wear, Ghesquière’s astute way with fabrication, construction, and technology is ever at play, evident through the seemingly lax crosshatching of a woven sheath, the multi-textural dresses, cropped bomber jackets, and printed panels of the multiple pairs of hot pants (which seem fitting of semi-tragic Iris of Taxi Driver for a ready ’70s reference). But it’s the maxi dress that’s the star of the collection – and likely the season! Flowing yet cinched with hourglass shape-inducing belts, accentuated with broad leather accents, cut out to reveal a bit of midriff flesh, or zippered down the front for modern edge, they avoid any superfluous volume and have style to spare. Unlike say, Saint Laurent’s randy nightcrawler of recent seasons, Louis Vuitton’s newly revitalized girl is not dressing for the spectacle (or to be part of the spectacle). By layering her deep-plunging camisoles over collared shirts and finishing her luxe apparel with chunky flip-flops, she’s announcing her clothes – and the confidence it takes to pull them off – are her thrill, and those alone. And no big surprise: I’m thrilled right along with her.

Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

Other Brands

When it comes to the top fashion trends to be seen on the runways, whether it is in terms of colors, patterns, styles, handbags, jewelry, hairstyles, makeup or nails, it appears that Jason Wu always has something unique and very cool to offer us measly fans who fall head over heels in love with so many of the brand’s latest looks. TheJason Wu pre-fall 2016 collection is no different really, particularly since it is clear that there was a lot of logic and reason that went into pulling together the lineup that will be available in stores for a long while yet.

Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

According to Wu himself, it is all about creating clothes that people will desire. “Now, everything has to be considered. Pieces really have to be able to stand on their own.” The calculations were made, the cloth was cut and the creations of an impeccable mind have truly wowed us now. The guiding factor has been Le Corbusier colors, while there is a very clear fight between the masculine and the feminine going on, with some pieces within the 23-look collection falling to one side of the spectrum and the others preferring the more feminine wiles.

Slouchy trousers and matching jackets are countered with mature midi dresses with small slits up the sides and a deeper neckline showing off just enough cleavage to yell sexy soccer mom. We have plaid dresses and slouchy, more masculine appearing suits with just enough tailoring to appear feminine enough, the added pearls around the neck offsetting the boyish effects of the shorn curly hair.

Some trends we notice other than the slouchy trousers and the midi hems to the skirts and dresses are high necks with faux ties and pretty pleats to go with it, some asymmetrical skirts, kitten heels and slingback shoes, long coats and patchwork pieces, pretty frills and translucent silhouettes. We fall for the silkier pieces that are all about the comfort given the looseness of the trousers and crisscrossed tops, while so many of the pieces seem to be made to accentuate the willowy slim figures of the ladies who dare to wear it.

Slits up the thighs, cutouts on the sides and deeper cuts to the necklines are a thing here, meaning one is sexy in comfort and still very much in style while following the latest trends. As for the transparent pieces, we can safely say that shapely legs are wanted and boy will they be looking amazing in these designs, particularly with all those lovely floral appliques on the dresses and shirts, left bare underneath. Details were what made the difference here, zippers put to good use as corset seaming on dresses and even jackets, sporty racer back designs on a pretty black and seemingly barely there dress looking all the more delectable.

When it comes to beauty looks, red lips mark the visage, often as the only patch of color on the skin that is bright and luminescent, kept quite bare to the world. Hair is parted from the center and pulled back or simply cut really short. Sometimes there are a few loose tendrils to be seen.

Altuzarra Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

Fashion

Among our very favorite brands out there, Altuzarra is certainly among the top 25. With good reason too for it combines chic and sophisticated with romantic and utterly stylish, generally speaking. The Altuzarra pre-fall 2016 collection is, of course, as lovely as expected, though seeing the pre-fall so soon after the unveiling of the spring and summer 2016 looks leaves our minds whirling. We have yet to add the earlier season’s pieces to our wardrobes, let alone the mid-season afterwards!

Altuzarra Pre-Fall 2016 Collection

There are twenty-eight looks in the collection, not nearly as many as one might expect, but the brand brings us quality and we can forgive them for the lack of quantity. There are at least a few looks that we are dying to have as our own as it is. Joseph Altuzarra has his customers in mind and that is an amazing thing. This capsule collection, dubbed Shadow Jersey, includes tech jerseys turned into sharply tailored pieces, things that can come out of the suitcase without the problem of wrinkles so you can travel worry-free.

A fitted double-breasted coat for the five months of sales? You got it! Keeping the shirtdresses on? Why not? They are a bestseller for the label. We cannot help but love the business thinking here, for fashion is as much business as it is art, if not more.

There is a whole romantic aspect to the Altuzarra pre-fall 2016 collection as well. We notice the whimsical manner of movement and the practicality of the pieces that inspire a certain form of desire, the emphasis placed on polka dots and cricket stripes to give it an intriguing pattern. We notice the slits up the thighs right off the bat, whether on simple black skirts or pretty black and white dotted cinched waist and short but puffed sleeve dresses.

There is the whole sock and shoe combo stiletto half boots as well, while things shine rather bright with black and red palettes offsetting the pretty squiggly diagonal designs on the midi skirts. Midi is in after all and most of the outfits on the runway show the trend, while others have tailored pants or suits to display, a rather lovely striped version coming in with a cinched waist, sleeveless vest and a good amount of skin shown at the neckline.

There are some pretty full-length dresses too, with spaghetti straps and a small train. While most of the looks are a chic and mature design, there are those that veer more towards individualistic or simply sexy, as one might expect from the brand. We love it all though and with those very 1970s handbags in tow, we cannot imagine a better label to be rooting for come the pre-fall days.

For the next few months, we’ll be topping up our clothing with the best of the more casual designs that our favorites have to offer, including pretty little dresses with slits up the thighs. Interesting that there are no plunging necklines here though.
